The Denton County Republican Party honored its activists from around the county Saturday at its annual Volunteer Dinner.

Suzanne Gilbert, precinct chair in Lantana, received the coveted Precinct Chair of the Year Award, originated in 1998 to recognize the Denton County Republican Precinct Chair who has fulfilled his/her responsibilities in an exemplary manner. In presenting the award to Gilbert, Dave Smith, who won the award in 2012, praised Suzanne for her personal contact with her constituents and for her faithful involvement in outreach within her community.

The prestigious Chairman’s Award went to Gary Toothaker. In presenting the award Chairman Hendrickson praised Gary’s extensive history of Republican involvement. Gary has started over two hundred Young Republican Clubs, organized bus rides to the polls, and led caravans to Washington D.C. to speak on conservative issues.

The DCRP’s highest award, that of Outstanding Volunteer, was presented by Deon Starnes, a previous recipient of the award. The award went to Karen Pausman of Dallas in recognition of her years of unselfish volunteerism at many events and within county community organizations in numerous ways.

A new award was launched at this year’s dinner called the Lifetime Achievement award to recognize the faithful service and lifetime achievements of dedicated activists. The first recipient of this award was Shirley Spellerberg of Corinth whose legendary work in the conservative movement is well known. In presenting the award, Chairman Hendrickson highlighted Shirley’s years of leadership in the conservative sphere, including Shirley’s hosting of a conservative talk radio program called “Speak Out Miami” and her time on television as a conservative counterpoint on the weekly show “To The Point.” She has been active in the Denton County Republican Party since 1980 and in numerous Republican clubs across the County, as well as serving at the State Party level on the State Republican Executive Committee.

Another new award was launched that evening. The Boots on the Ground Award for service and activism was presented to Richard Steenson of Flower Mound, Lynn Yeargain of Hickory Creek, Deon Starnes of Denton, Kathy Carrington of Lewisville, Jennifer Windmill of Trophy Club and Jennifer Moulton of Denton.

GOP clubs from across the county recognized their Outstanding Members. Those honorees included: Debbie Terry of Argyle (Denton Republican Women’s Club); Shirley Spellerberg of Corinth (Denton County Republican Assembly); Renee Stoltenberg of Flower Mound (Ladies of Liberty Republican Club); Richard Steenson of Flower Mound (Flower Mound Area Republican Club); Jim Horn (North Denton County Young Republicans);  Joe Tims of Fort Worth (Tri County Republican Club); Mark Pavlovich of Double Oak (Denton County Conservative Coalition) and Jim Crouch (Lewisville Area Republican Club).

State Senator Jane Nelson acted as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton gave the keynote address.  Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and scores of elected officials were present.  Over 180 people from across north Texas attended the event, according to Chairman Hendrickson, which was very successful in achieving its dual goals of honoring the Party’s dedicated activists and giving all who attended a truly delightful evening.
