A Word from the County Judge

Denton County Days a Huge Success

An estimated 225 individuals from area cities, chambers of commerce and school districts joined us for the Denton County Days 2023 in Austin at the State Capitol.

As the largest Denton County Days event with representation from all four corners of the county, we made an impact at the Capitol as we met with Legislators in the House and Senate to bring important issues affecting Denton County to the forefront.

I would personally like to thank all of the attendees as well as our Denton County Legislative Delegation, for making this such a successful event. I would also like to give a big shout out to all of the Denton County chambers of commerce as well as our Denton County staff for all of their efforts.

After delivering a passport complete with information and legislative priorities to each Legislator, individuals gathered in several briefings on Tuesday to discuss everything from education issues from Raise Your Hand Texas to the state’s economy by Texas Workforce Commissioner Aaron Demerson to economic development and tourism by Larry McManus with Texas Economic Development & Tourism, Office of the Governor.

With a 3.9 percent unemployment rate, Texas and Denton County has been in the driver’s seat for our respective economies. Aaron Demerson spoke of the need to increase daycare across the state and indicated the state provides incentives to businesses for hiring veterans and those with disabilities.

In the tourism arena, Texas continues to thrive with 54 Fortune 500 headquarters in the state, more than New York or California. Since 2015, around 275 corporate headquarters have relocated to Texas. In addition, Texas works to diversify its economy so as not to become dependent on one industry, Larry McManus noted. Small businesses are vital to the economy, representing 90 percent of existing businesses in the state.

Early Wednesday, during our Denton County Delegation Breakfast, our Denton County Legislative Delegation and Secretary of State Jane Nelson spoke about issues at the top of the state’s agenda, including securing the border, education finance, addressing mental health, and continued economic development – to name a few.

The House and Senate then recognized Denton County Commissioners Court, continuing a tradition we have been honored to receive during each Denton County Days event.

We look forward to joining everyone for the next Denton County Days in 2025.
