History of the Denton County Republican Party
The Denton County Republican Party (DCRP) has grown from a kitchen-table operation into one of the most active and influential county Republican organizations in Texas. Its mission has always been to advance conservative values, educate voters, support candidates, and uphold the principles of limited government, individual liberty, and fiscal responsibility.
Grassroots Beginnings (1972–1990s)
The modern DCRP began in 1972, when Jim and Mary Horn founded the local party at their kitchen table. That same grassroots spirit continues today. In 1980, Jim Horn made history by becoming the first Republican in over a century to win a countywide election to the Texas Legislature. Mary Denny followed as County Chair in 1983, launching the annual Lincoln Day Dinner and later flipping House District 63 to Republican control in 1992 — a seat she held for seven terms.
Organizational Growth and Stability (2000s–2010s)
In 2002, Dianne Edmondson took over as County Chair and served for 14 years. During this time, the DCRP matured into a professional and organized force in Denton County, with improved bylaws, robust fundraising, and expanded precinct-level engagement. The party maintained an overwhelming Republican majority in elected offices throughout the county.
Modern Expansion and Influence (2020–Present)
From 2020 onward, the DCRP has entered a new era marked by expanded outreach, bold leadership, and renewed grassroots energy. The party weathered the COVID-19 pandemic by pivoting quickly to digital communications, online training, and remote organizing tools.
In 2024, the Party adopted new bylaws for the 2024–2026 term and reinvigorated its structure by expanding its committee system, increasing volunteer participation, and focusing on data-driven strategies to reach voters across all 107 precincts.
The annual Lincoln Reagan Dinner has continued to grow in impact and attendance, with the 41st Annual event in 2025 featuring prominent national speakers like Steve Bannon and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. It has become a celebration of conservative grassroots victories and a rallying point for the year ahead.
Commitment to the Future
The DCRP’s vision is focused on the next generation of Republican leadership. With programs aimed at training new precinct chairs, supporting school board and city council candidates, and educating voters on conservative policies, the party is preparing to lead Denton County for decades to come.
Whether it’s defending election integrity, protecting parental rights, or growing local influence in the State and National GOP, the Denton County Republican Party remains committed to preserving the values that built Texas — faith, family, freedom, and fiscal sanity.
