Sometimes the most important work in politics happens long before anyone picks up a gavel.
I arrived at the Denton County Republican Party headquarters at 9:00 this morning, and there was one priority for the day: making sure the Precinct 1 Special meeting would have a quorum for tonight’s meeting.
With the resignation of the sitting Republican Constable for Precinct 1, the Executive Committee has the responsibility of selecting a Republican nominee from two qualified candidates. That responsibility can only be carried out if enough committee members are present.
The required quorum is 14 members.
At 9:00 this morning, there were no RSVP commitments.
What I witnessed over the next several hours was a reminder that grassroots leadership often happens behind the scenes. Chair Melinda Preston spent the morning calling, texting, and personally reaching out to precinct chairs. Every conversation mattered. Every returned call mattered. Every commitment mattered.
This wasn’t about checking a box on a calendar. It was about making sure the Republican voters of Precinct 1 have the representation they deserve through the process established by our party.
One by one, the responses started coming in.
People called back.
They committed to attend.
As the day went on, the list of confirmed attendees continued to grow until the quorum needed for tonight’s meeting was secured.
That may not be the part of politics most people ever see, but it’s one of the most important. Strong organizations don’t run on election day alone. They run because people answer the phone, honor their commitments, and understand that even a single meeting can have a meaningful impact.
Tonight, the Precinct chairs will carry out their responsibility.
This morning, I had the opportunity to watch the work that made that meeting possible.
Sometimes leadership isn’t about standing behind a podium.
Sometimes it’s about making one more phone call.
